Hello, I'm struggling a bit with the song Nu 'oli. I would like to sing this with a choir, and there are two places in the song where the placement of the lyrics causes problems, so I would like to shift the lyrics a bit. The question is whether the result is still correct in Hawaiian. The problem is when a sentence ends with a word with an okina ('). The song is in 3/4 measure. The first sentence where a have a problem is: beat | beat beat beat | beat He nu ka- ma- ha 'o Can I change this to beat | beat beat beat | beat He nu ka- ma-ha 'o Same question for beat | beat beat beat | beat i ke ku- la a 'i- a'i Can I change this to beat | beat beat beat | beat i ke ku- la a 'i-a 'i Any help appreciated. |

The spacing in my message got disturbed, so it's probably not clear what I mean. I will try to rephrase my question. In the original, there is a syllable on each beat: (1) He (2) nu (3) ka- (4) ma- (5) ha'o The "ha'o" is difficult to sing since it falls on an beat with emphasis, so I would like to change this to (1) He (2) nu (3) ka- (4) ma-ha (5) 'o The same for: (1) i ke (2) ku- (3) la (4) a 'i- (5) a'i Which I would like to change to: (1) i ke (2) ku- (3) la a (4) 'i-a (5) 'i I hope this makes sense. |
