Aloha,
I'm a musician who lived for many years in the islands and, of course, I've been greatly influenced by island music and musicians.
I'm recording a medley of Hawaiian/Tahitian songs starting with Andy Cumming's "Maui Girl", then moving into a traditional "Iorana" from Tahiti, then moving to a himene-style ending.
I believe I have the lyrics correct but would like to check one last time.
Anybody have the lyrics to either "Maui Girl" or "Iorana"?

Hi Rose,
Maruru roa for your help with this song. I talked with Roland Teai, in Tahiti, who has been in the music scene for a long time. We finally found the song covered by a french group in the 80s, Voyage. It's called "Tahiti, Tahiti"and they take credit for it, but it's really an old traditional song that you've heard a million times..
Is this song part (or derived from) the song(s) you mention?
Thanks for your kokua,
Travis

Tahiti Tahiti is the song by Voyage! One of my favorites I found listening to and taping a radio station at home in Hawai'i RADIO FREE HAWAI'I which no longer exists. They played all kinds of obscure music. This song was also in Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie True Lies in the opening scene it's playing in the background.

I *love* this song- always reminds me of home (Waianae), even if it was recorded by a otherwise non-polynesian 80's disco group! I don't know if all of the words are right (especially wrt splits and accents), and would appreciate corrections.... Also, if anyone has an english translation, please post it!

you probably want the version sung by the group "Na Waiho'olu'u O Ke Anuenue." i grew up with this version of the song and had never even heard the Voyage one til today.

I'm from Tahiti, but live in California now. My husband use to live in Hawaii many years ago, and played with the band "Paul Flynn".. He is recording "Te vahine tahiti" right now. Anyone need lyrics and translation, go to google, type te vahine tahiti lyrics and you'll get the translation in french and english. Hope that will help.

A good idea for people to get lyrics and song info to go beneath the surface and at least learn enough french and tahitian to do your own search b/c there is a plathora of info on the net if you know at least manini kine vocab. Music, song and dance is great, but lets do our part to understand a bit more and appreciate the true value of all Polynesian cultures, not just what people want to see on stage, on tv, or at parades.

Ia orana outou! I appreciate everyone's desire to know the translations of songs before they try and perform them. This means a lot and reflects the principle that language is the center of culture. Here are some corrections of the song Tahiti Tahiti. I have added some translation also.

Iaorana oe Tavana rahi e
(Greetings to you great chief
E te Tavana rahi e
Iaora, iaorana iaora i te farereiraa e (repeat)(Greetings at this meeting occasion)

Iaorana, Iaorana, Iaorana e
(Greetings)
Te vahine Tahiti
(Tahitian girl)
Aue aue te nehenehe
(Oh, such beauty!)
Te vahine Tahiti
(The Tahitian girl)

Tiare, tiare, tiare e
(The flower)
Mo`orea e
Aue aue te noanoa
(Oh, such fragrant beauty!)
Te tiare Mo`orea
(The Moorea flower)

To fare niau e,
(My traditional hut i.e. w/coconut leaves)
I Borabora nui e
(In great Borabora)
Ua here vau ia oe
(I love you Borabora)
Borabora e

Na te moana e
(Over the ocean)
Ua reva ta'u tane iti e
(My man is flying)
Aue te arofa e
(Oh, the love!)
Ta`u tane iti e
(My man) (not too sure about this last stanza)

Hope this helps,
ia haamaitai te Fatu ia outou,
faaitoito,
Tearatai tane

I am so happy to have come across this forum. I think it's great that from what I have read so far everyone is so very helpful. I am not Tahitian but, I grew up learning about the culture with a dance group I belonged to- I haven't danced in a couple of years and songs often pop and just can't stop singing! There is a song that is very special to me because we used in competition in the early 90's but, cannot remember for the life of me what the translation is- Vaitape I Nunue... I hope I am spelling that correctly... Does anyone have the lyrics and translation? Any help would be appreciated!
I also wanted to mention that over the years we competed at different competitions and if I can locate my 'dance' binder the lyrics for the songs listed above- E piko, Tipi Tipi and others are MOST likely there along with many others since we have used these songs in competiton/performance.

Hope to hear from you soon!

This is wonderful!! For some time now I'm looking for lyrics for E Vahine Tahiti and now I found it, finally! I have the version from Voyage, but I'd love to have other versions and expecially the one from the group "Na Waiho'olu'u O Ke Anuenue". Funny, I didn't even know it was in a movie, the first time I heard it was on an online Hawaiian radio station and I immediately loved it.
Thank you all for this information and if you do have any tips on how to get other versions from the other end of the world (The Netherlands), especially from the above mentioned group (but all other tips are welcome!), please send me a message! I'll be on holiday for 2 weeks, but will answer all mails when I'm back. Again: Thank you!

Omg, I thought I was the only person on the planet who knows the song by Voyage! I'm 43 and grew up in the disco craze. I still have the vinyl from Voyage. Their music was very universal. The album where Bora, Bora is on(Tahiti, Tahiti) starts out with the song Souveniers, (kidda discoish) then it goes into Kamchak, (an Eastern Indian theme) then right into Bora Bora! Albums back then crossfaded songs perfectly matching beats. (presumably so disco dancers didn't have to stop dacing.) I'm from Guam and still listen to this song to make me happy. I'm glad I finally know what the words mean! Voyage was one of the first groups to have a very clean sound. The bass drum beat was synthesized not muffled like most music back then. A lot of their song's were used in fashion shows.

There is a version by the band Voyage and there is a version by the band Na Waiho'olu'u O Ke Anuenue.
I think it's still possible to by a CD from Voyage with this song on it.You can find it on the album "Best of Voyage: Souvenirs".
The version by Na Waiho'olu'u O Ke Anuenue is a different story. After a long search I succeeded in finding an album on which this song is. It's out of print but I managed to buy one at CD Universe:

Good luck and enjoy the song!

This may sound a little crazy, but i'm 24 and grew up in hawaii and remember listening to Vahine Tahiti on the radio. I have since grown in musical tastes and liten to just about everything now. I was listening to a streaming "techno" station that played "hardstyle" and I heard them mix in Vahine Tahiti into one of their sets. The DJ on set was DJ Mystery if that helps. If anyone knows this song i'd greatly appreciate any info, or the mp3 of it!
