I have been looking for the lyrics, too, but I'm pretty sure that the words he sings are in Fijian, Tongan or some other language (but not Samoan or Hawaiian).

This is what I could find on the lyrics. Don't know if anyone is still looking...

E papa waiari
E hine hoki mai ra    Return to me, e hine
*    *
E papa waiari    Sighing and grieving
Taku nei mahi    Is what I have been doing
Taku nei mahi    Is what I have been doing
hei tuku roimata    Here are my tears of woe
*    *
E aue e ka mate ahau    Alas I will die
E hine hoki mai ra    Return to me e hine
*    *
Maku e kaute o hikoitanga x2    I will count your footsteps

Thanks for the lyrics!
But what comes after "and we're going to Africa..."?
Still a mystery.

Kia ora everyone
The first part of the Chant of the Islands intro on Fiji's album is a Maori song, called E Papa. He actually sings the wrong words also. I have no idea why he says he is going to Africa at the end either. Like I said, he's going by himself.
The song is a lament by a man, who is speaking to his elder, named Waiari. He longs for the girl that has left him and he will the count her footsteps until she returns to him

I have one song on a very old album that I have been searching for lyrics. It is on an album called - Hawaii Calls Blue Hawaii,and has a mixture of artists. All the other songs on the album are Hapa Haole except for this one. It starts out with an Oli.

Thanks

Hey, I was looking for the English translation to Fiji's song "Chant of the Islands" too. Turns out that the song is actually a Maori children song called "E papa Waiari". Here's the original song followed by the translation in English:

(Maori)

1. E papä Waiari, taku nei mahi
Taku nei mahi, he tuku roimata

Chorus:
Ë aue, ka mate au; E hine hoki mai rä
Ë aue, ka mate au; E hine hoki mai rä

2. Mäku e kaute öhïkoitanga
Mäku e kaute öhïkoitanga

(English)

1. O elder Waiari my habit has been
My habit has been to shed tears

Chorus:
Alas I will die; oh girl, return to me
Alas I will die; oh girl, return to me

2. I will count your footsteps
I will count your footsteps

Why are there different versions to the lyrics? Which is the correct one? And how come not all the lyrics aren't included for example, at the end of the song where it says "ikulu lega" or whatever he says?
