| My father-in-law grew up in Haleiwa and loved this song. He sang it while playing his ukulele to entertain his children and the neighbors. I found the following on the Internet, which is almost exactly as he sang it, but made a few translation notes of my own for a friend in Texas who had heard it once. I hope this will help those who have heard the song before, and would love to know more about the words. Charles Shores MANUELA BOY © 1938, 1946, 1966, 1974 Lyrics & Music: Johnny Noble Sheet Music: In Songs of Hawaii © 1950 Miller Music Corp. | The big question is "What does Manuela mean?" The Hawaiian dictionary says manuea means careless. Is that it? |

| I believe the meaning behind "Manuela Boy" is that a young man, named Manuel, angers his parents, who tell him he has no shame ("hilahila") and they're not going to give him any more money ("five cent"), that he can't live in the house anymore and that he has to go sleep in A'ala Park. At the time, A'ala Park was a kind of skid row where drunks used to hang out. Really I think it's just a silly song with dozens of made-up verses, some funny, some kolohe (naughty). Jesse Tinsley |

| Manuela is a "Portagee" name. The Portugese (my tutu - grandmother - included were a significant immigrant group to the islands where they worked on sugar plantations. |
