| Here's how I play it...JT Little Brown Gal - by Don McDiarmid & Lee Wood G D7 It's not the islands fair that are calling to me G It's not the balmy air nor the tropical sea E7 A7 But it's a little brown gal in a little grass skirt D7 G In a little grass shack in Hawaii G D7 It isn't Waikiki or Kamehameha's pali G Not the beach boys free with their ho'omalimali E7 A7 It's a little brown gal in a little grass skirt D7 G In a little grass shack in Hawaii Chorus: Em B7 Through that island wonderland Em B7 She's broken all the kanes' hearts Em B7 It's not hard to understand Em (or C) D7 For that wahine is a gal apart G D7 I'll be leaving soon but the thrill I enjoy G Is not the island moon nor the fish and the poi E7 A7 It's just a little brown gal in a little grass skirt D7 G In a little grass shack in Hawaii |

| Kamehameha" pali- Kamehameha was the first king to unite all the islands. Pali- is a cliff on the island of Oahu. It is a very popular tourist site. Pali means cliff. Old stories tell that King Kamehameha found the opposing chiels and drove them off the "pali" to their deaths. Ho'omalimali- means when you do things to gain a persons trust. Most you do this if you want something in return. Nowadays, they would refer to this as "suckin-up" Hope that I have helped you. |

What is the current feeling about the appropriatness of these lyrics in light of modern sensibilities concerning diversity and stereotyping? Are these lyrics demeaning to women of color? |

Kamehameha was the first king of the hawaiian islads, and the pali (which means cliff) is a location on oahu which was his "lookout" whenever there were wars. Hoomalimali is also a location. |

RE: Theresa's message above about the lyrics of "Little Brown Gal" Obviously it's not really an island favorite anymore, but it lives on in the memories of those who lived through WWII and in territorial Hawaii. It's silly, it's politically incorrect and it's from a different era. IMHO, Jesse Tinsley |

Regarding Hoomalimali: The hula movement which goes with the phrase involves a little sexy hip thrust that certainly has more to do with, at least within the context of this song, a beach boy's flirting with a tourist than a place name. |

Does anyone know who wrote or recorded the parody of Little Grass Shack where the singer stumbles over the Hawaiian-lyric sections every time he meets them, making 3 or 4 attempts at each encounter to get them right? |

Come on, enough with the political stuff. As a child learning this hula in the early 60's, it was just a fun song, easy to learn and just brings back good memories of a Hawaii that is long gone.(Unless you live in Kealakekua, Hawaii)! |

Mahalo nui for the IMHO tag Jesse but; "It's silly, it's politically incorrect and it's from a different era." That just about describes Hawaii at any state of its statehood. Traditionally we don't view the world or ourselves in the same overly serious way the rest of the world unfortunately tends to... and it speaks volumes that anyone would find Little Brown Gal derogatory or politically incorrect: It must be understood that any Hawaiian views being brown a completely beautiful thing. As it should be;-) RE: Theresa's message above about the lyrics of "Little Brown Gal" Obviously it's not really an island favorite anymore, but it lives on in the memories of those who lived through WWII and in territorial Hawaii. It's silly, it's politically incorrect and it's from a different era. IMHO, Jesse Tinsley |
